Understanding the Coached Class Format

Overview

Coached Class sessions are live, virtual classes led by a AHS Worldwide coach. These classes are designed to deepen understanding of Character Core lessons through discussion, activities, and application-based learning.

This article explains what happens during a Coached Class session and what students should expect.


Class Length and Schedule

  • Each Coached Class session lasts approximately 50 minutes

  • Classes meet 4 days per week

  • Students are encouraged to view the content of a lesson before attending class

  • Classes follow the official Character Core calendar


Typical Coached Class Session Structure

While each class may vary slightly, most sessions follow a consistent outline.


1. StartRight Exercise (5–6 minutes)

  • A short activity to help students focus and prepare

  • May include movement, reflection, or a quick mindset activity


2. Welcome, Prayer, and Recitation (2–3 minutes)

  • Class welcome and opening prayer

  • Review or recitation related to the lesson or unit


3. “He Knows Me” (Middle School Only – ~2 minutes)

  • Students share evidence of God’s love in their lives

  • Encourages reflection and spiritual connection


4. Optional Segments

Depending on the day and unit, the coach may include:

  • On This Day in His-Story (2–3 minutes)

  • Student Highlight or Share Time (3–4 minutes)


5. Review, Research, Reason, Relate

This is the core instructional portion of the class.

Students will:

  • Review what they learned in the lesson

  • Research key ideas together

  • Reason through questions and discussions

  • Relate concepts to real life and personal experience


6. Interactive Activities (15–20 minutes)

Activities may include:

  • Micro games

  • Competitions

  • Drawing or writing

  • Small discussions

  • Videos

  • Educational tools like Kahoot

These activities reinforce learning in a fun and engaging way.


7. Coach’s Challenge (30 seconds)

  • A short challenge that encourages students to apply what they learned


8. Project Check-In & Next Steps (5 minutes)

  • Review progress on unit projects

  • Explain upcoming lessons or expectations


9. Closing Activity or Game (5 minutes)

  • Often a Kahoot or interactive review

  • Ends the class on an engaging note


Important Notes

  • Coached Classes focus on participation and application, not grading

  • Assignments may be submitted, but they are not graded

  • Parents remain responsible for assessment unless using Academic Suite
