Understanding the Family School Course Structure

Overview

Each Family School course is organized in a consistent way to help parents and students easily find lessons, resources, and learning materials. This article explains what you will see when you open a course and how to navigate it.


What You See When You Open a Course

When you open any course in Family School, you will find the following main sections.


1. Course Overview

At the top of the course, you will see:

  • The course title

  • A course description explaining what the course covers and its learning goals

This section gives you a high-level understanding of the course before you begin.


2. Table of Contents

The Table of Contents organizes the entire course and helps you quickly find lessons and resources.

You will see:

  • Course units

  • Individual lessons within each unit

  • A Resources section containing helpful documents, such as:

    • Course Welcome Letter

    • Printable Table of Contents

    • Recommended Readings (when available)

    • Materials and Preparation Lists

    • Supplemental Downloads (PDFs you can download and print)


3. Lesson Options

Many lessons includes two written formats:

  • Full Lesson

    • Complete lesson content

    • Additional background and learning material

  • Condensed Lesson

    • Shortened version

    • Focuses on the main ideas of the lesson

If you are logged in using a student account, some lessons will also include a Video Lesson.
(Video availability varies by course and lesson.)


4. Lesson Layout and Navigation

When you open a lesson:

  • A left-hand menu displays the Learning Path

  • The Learning Path shows the different pages or steps within the lesson

  • Students move through each page in order as they complete the lesson

This layout helps students stay focused and understand where they are in class.
